Kitchen Gadgets - Vacuum Sealer

One thing that every prepper should have in their kitchen is a vacuum sealer. The number of uses for a vacuum sealer are endless. From preserving foods, to sealing jars, to sealing rolls of toilet paper; there are lots of ways you can benefit by having a vacuum sealer. They are fairly cheap especially if you can find a good deal for one on the internet, or get one on sale. The rolls of film are also pretty inexpensive and can be purchased off the web cheaper than in the store.

The Utah Preppers Network did a good post on the jar sealing attachment that you can purchase for vacuum sealers. It allows you to vacuum seal jars of food to increase shelf life. It isn't an alternative to pressure canning but will work with things you would need access to regularly. Most people know that you can use vacuum sealers to seal food and prolong it's shelf life. They work great to preserve foods you have dehydrated, food that you want to freeze, or pretty much anything you want to seal.

You can also use the sealer to vacuum seal lots of non-food items. I've seen people vacuum seal pairs of jeans, shirts, and socks to compress their size to put in one's Bug Out Bag. Knine, one of the KPN contributors, posted a tip and said he vacuum seals rolls of toilet paper which makes them a lot smaller and easier to store. The possibilities are endless when using your vacuum sealer. Obviously they use electricity so unless you have a solar setup you won't be able to use them off grid but they're very handy and will benefit you while you are hopefully still on the grid.

Kitchen Gadgets - Measuring Cups

Hopefully if you have any sort of kitchen you already have a decent set of measuring cups. Measuring cups are pretty much a must have if you plan on cooking anything. Owning a complete set of measuring cups is important when cooking meals that require specific measurements of items. Veteran cookers might be able to get by with eyeballing and estimating the amounts but for all others I would advise measuring it out to ensure the right amount is used.

In an emergency situation where you are cooking solely from your food storage getting the amounts of each ingredient correct would be extremely important. You don't want to use too much of one ingredient and risk running out of it sooner than others. If you build your food storage based on serving sizes getting these right to make your food storage last as long as you planned is a critical part. You don't want to be caught with no measuring cups and unable to get the amounts right for your food when cooking from your food storage.

I picked up a cheap measuring cup set from Wal-Mart that has all the standard types of measurements in one easy to keep up with set. This was less than $5 so there's no reason not to have a good set of measuring cups. It wouldn't be a bad idea to get a set and keep it exclusively with your food storage so it wouldn't get lost. It's never a bad idea to have more than one of anything relating to your preparedness plan. You never know when you might misplace or break something and it would be helpful to have an extra one.

Kitchen Gadgets - Knife Sharpener

A knife sharpener is another kitchen gadget that a lot of people overlook. Instead of buying quality knives and keeping them sharp, people throw them away and buy new, or try to cut with a dull knife. There isn't much worse (in the cutting world) than trying to cut something up with a dull knife. A good knife sharpener is a great investment and something great for preppers to keep in the kitchen.

Keeping a quality knife sharpened will save you money over time by not having to keep purchasing new knifes. This also goes for your camping, hunting, or survival knifes. Purchase a quality knife and have alongside the knife, a quality sharpener. A hand sharpener is best because it doesn't require electricity so it would be good off the grid. Keeping your knifes sharp will make the work you do with the knife a lot easier. Vegetables, bread, fruits, and pretty much everything cuts better if you are working with a sharp knife.

There are a lot of knife sharpeners out there and it's hard to decide which one to get. I like the AccuSharp Knife and Tool Sharpener. It works great, it's simple to use and it's great for beginners who would like to start taking care of their knives. It's made in the USA and is not going to break your budget. If you decide to pick this one up make sure you get an extra set of blades because it features interchangeable blades and it would be a good idea to keep some stocked up.

There are a lot of sharpeners on the market. If you're a knife sharpening veteran I'm sure you would rather use a stone and hand sharpen. While that's great, it's good for beginners and those who can't use a wet stone to have a way to keep their kitchen and survival knives sharp. Make sure you follow the instructions when you're sharpening your knife and be extra careful not to cut yourself. A sharp knife needs to be handled with care.

Kitchen Gadgets - Smooth Edge Can Opener

A can opener is an essential kitchen gadget to keep around. For obvious reasons, they allow you to open cans easily. Regular can openers leave sharp edges and once opened the cannot be closed back. The contents of the can must be eaten before they go bad. Enter in the smooth edge can opener. The smooth edge can opener opens the can from the side, creating a smooth edge that isn't sharp, and creates a lid that can be added back onto the top of the can for a nearly perfect seal.

Pampered Chef makes a popular smooth edge can opener that I'm sure everyone is familiar with. I'm also sure most smooth edge can openers on the market are a lot better than the conventional can openers. I have had experience with the Pampered Chef products, but I chose to go with the Oxo Smooth Edge Can Opener. The Oxo Can Opener doesn't leave any sharp edges, has a patented side-wind mechanism for effortless cutting, easy to turn soft-grip knobs and non-slip handles, dishwasher safe, and comes with a limited lifetime warranty.

The Oxo Can Opener is a necessary item in your food storage. A lot of times you're not going to eat the whole can of food after you open it, so with a smooth edge opener you can put the lid back on the can and save the food for later. This works great if you purchased a large bulk can of something and need it to last a few days. Even with the lid back on and sealed the food won't last forever, make sure to eat it within the next few days as quick as possible. This is why it's good to purchase smaller portioned canned goods to lower the risk of having to throw out food. In a survival situation, throwing out food is a huge no-no.

If you have a smooth edge can opener in the kitchen, great. I keep one dedicated in my food storage; and it would never hurt to have a spare lying around. If you don't own a smooth edge can opener I would suggest picking one up. Amazon sells the Oxo Can Opener for around $20.00. The opener is well made, great quality, and should hold up to years of use without any issue.

Kitchen Gadgets - The Funnel

Most people have a fully stocked kitchen with the tools they need to cook nearly anything. But it still seems that people overlook some of the simplest things to keep around. A funnel set is one of these overlooked items. Funnels come in handy a lot and help keep things clean and prevent spills. If you're transferring liquid from bottle to bottle always use a funnel. It's faster and a lot cleaner.

Most people buy their preps in bulk, so it wouldn't be uncommon to have a large bottle of cooking oil, water, honey, ect. Buying preps in large quantities is a great way to save money and save space, but they aren't as easy to work with. This is why it's important to have some smaller bottles that you can transfer the products into, and with a funnel you can pour them in without spilling or losing any. If you don't have a good funnel set you can pick one up at your local supermarket and for less than $5 you can have a funnel set with multiple sizes. In the event of a disaster, every little bit counts so you want to conserve your preps as much as you can.
